ABC's Style Guide
- - - - by Batya
This arrived in the mail and is worth reading and acting on.
ABC: "One person's terrorist is usually someone else's freedom fighter"
Every media organization provides its journalists with a 'Style Guide'. The guide instructs journalists on correct use of language and style for that organisation. Cadet journalists spend long hours making sure that their writing style conforms to the organisation's guidelines.
The new ABC style guide explains in great detail to journalists how "one man's terrorist is someone else's freedom fighter". Says the guideline by implication, this mainly applies in the Middle East conflict, and only to Israel's statements about terrorism.
I was personally shocked when I read the guide. I suspected that this phrase was said "behind closed doors", but when you see it in print it is absolutely staggering.
I need your support and feedback. ICJS Research is trying to get the whole section on terrorism revoked. Please draw it to the attention of as many people as possible and put as many comments on the website as you can. This will help.
This might be one (albeit small) victory which we can actually win.
Many of our community leaders, and many federal politicians look at the ICJS Research website. They see your comments and can judge community feeling. I have no doubt that if this story gets into the mainstream the ABC will look at your comments. Let them know how you feel. [But keep comments sensible].
